The 48 Hour Plan — What To Do When Debt Feels Overwhelming

When everything feels too big the answer is never to try and solve everything at once.

The answer is to do the next right thing. And then the next one. And then the one after that.

This is your 48 hour plan. Not a complete financial recovery — that comes later. Just the next 48 hours. Manageable, specific and genuinely actionable starting from right now.

Hour one — Cancel the unnecessary

Open your banking app and go to your direct debits and standing orders. Look at every single one.

Cancel anything that is not essential. Subscriptions you forgot about. Apps you never use. A gym membership from a resolution that did not stick. Streaming services you could manage without for now.

Do not overthink it. If you cannot immediately justify it as genuinely necessary to your daily functioning — cancel it. You can reinstate things later when the situation has stabilised. Right now every pound matters.

Most people find between £30 and £100 of subscriptions they had genuinely forgotten about. That money — redirected to your most urgent priority — makes a real difference.

Today — Open the post

Not to read everything in forensic detail. Not to call anyone. Not to solve anything.

Just to open it.

Go to wherever the unopened post is — the pile on the counter, the drawer you have been avoiding, the stack by the door — and open every envelope. Make two piles. Bills — utilities, rent, council tax. Debt letters — credit cards, loans, collectors.

That is all. Two piles. Letters open. You have faced it. And that — however small it sounds — is braver than it looks from the outside.

This week — The negotiation call

This is the one most people never make because they do not know it is possible.

Call each creditor and say exactly this:

“Hi, my name is [name] and my account number is [number]. I am currently experiencing financial hardship and I want to be proactive about it. I am unable to meet my current minimum payment and I would like to know what hardship options are available to me please.”

Then stop talking. Let them respond.

That sentence can pause interest. Reduce minimum payments. Stop collection calls while your account is under review. It unlocks options that are never advertised but always exist.

Also this week — The free call

StepChange. 0800 138 1111. Free. Confidential. No judgment.

One call can assess your full situation, negotiate with creditors on your behalf and — if appropriate — apply for a Breathing Space. A legal 60 day period where creditors must freeze interest and stop all contact while you get your affairs in order.

Most people who make this call say it was the best decision they made in the whole process.

Make it this week.
